Question: SURVEY: Should the government mandate a set price for gasoline? Why, why not?
( Back )
Answer #1:
No-the easiest and most obvious reason is that they can do nothing right. There are many more multifaceted reasons also but there isn't enough time or space on YA to go into them.
Answer #2:
For great insight into the effects that price controls have on the economy, you should look into the effect that price controls have had on influenza vaccine. There's a reason why almost all of the company that used to produce flu vaccine don't anymore, and thus in recent years we've seen radical surpluses and deficits with respect to the number of vaccine availble each year.Answer #3:
Heck NO,,,,,when the government regulates the price of any product, the supply of that product is reduced.Yeah so now gas is only $1.00 a gallon but you cannot buy it anywhere.
Answer #4:
No because then it gives them reason to mandate other businesses. Why give our current government more reason to push for socialism. Freedom is not socialism and it is not our government place to regulate pricing and profits. Supply and demand controls these issues. If the government wants to benefit Americans and help curb the excessive cost of foreign oil then we must use our own supply and make it more cost effective for other resources that are renewable and beneficial to Americans.
But that would mean that our government would need to actually look after Americans best interest which I might point out it has failed to do in any current living person lifetime.
Keep in mind that we have a large reserve that can be tapped at anytime if the government allows. We simply choose not to do so because the oil industry drives our dollar.
Think about it, how may political leaders have their hand in the oil industry? When gas was hitting record highs a few years ago we suddenly began to see a booming housing market crumble with higher energy costs and consumer products. If oil goes up, the price of everything goes up. If the price goes up more profit can be hidden and unaccounted for.
Answer #5:
Jimmy Carter tried this back in the 1970's. When the oil refineries could not raise their prices to cover the price of the crude oil they were buying - they ceased production in order to minimize the amount of money they were losing. As a result we had gasoline rationing in California and I remember waiting in line for over two hours in order to buy gas.
Answer #6:
No, because by allowing the government to control something, even if it benefits you, you are effectively setting a precedent that the government can intervene in areas that the Constitution does not allow.Look up the history of the Boston Tea Party. These colonists did something illegal, ruining British tea, because they did not believe they should be taxed without representation. ***Most people know this part of the story*** However, most people don't realize that the Tea Tax actually lowered the cost of tea to the colonists. Though they would have been getting cheaper Tea, by accepting the tax, the colonists would have been submitting to the idea that the government could tax them without their consent.
"Taxation without representation is tyranny" Though we have representatives in Congress today, how many times can you count that unpopular laws or taxes have been passed against the will of the people?
Though we have representatives, I'm not so sure that we really have representation.
